William J. Schmitz, Jr., Ph.D., is a Physical Oceanographer whose main research interests during his 40 year career were related to the low-frequency large-scale circulation of the ocean, covering regional, basin and global domains. Although my inclinations are basically observational, some of my most rewarding experiences involved model-data intercomparisons with Bill Holland, Dana Thompson and Harley Hulburt and his group. In the past few years prior to my retirement from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1996 I focused on summaries of the North Atlantic and Global Circulations. Various publications on these topics may be found in my resume or CV. After I retired to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1997, I began familiarizing myself with the publication base on the circulation in the Gulf of Mexico. Over the past couple of years, I have been preparing a review of what is known about the circulation of the Gulf, including the applicability of various numerical experiments there. This review is a wide ranging living document summarizing what I have learned, and is in the process of being placed on the SERF web site. I am presently a Scientist Emeritus at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and a Research Scientist (part-time) at the Shoreline Environmental Research Facility.
